Embracing New Beginnings: A Summer of Reflection and Growth

Updated: Sep 21, 2025

A Sacred Summer in the Panhandle of Idaho

Summertime in the Panhandle of Idaho feels almost sacred. For over 100 days, the skies stay blue. Mornings begin in the soft mid-70s, and by August, the heat peaks in the high 90s—sometimes even stretching into September.

When I was married, summer meant adventure. My husband and I spent countless weekends camping and traveling in our fifth wheel. In Oregon, campgrounds stayed open all year. But here in Idaho, they close after Labor Day, signaling the end of the season.

A Bittersweet Goodbye Tour

This year, the first two months of summer were uneventful. But then, I took what I call my Goodbye Tour to Eugene—one last trip to close the chapter of my childhood. I spent a few days in Florence, Oregon, at the beach. That stretch of coast holds memories from childhood through adulthood: teaching in the school district there, meeting my husband, and feeling at home in the rhythm of the ocean. It was bittersweet.

Eugene has changed. Its once-gracious neighborhoods are now filled with homeless camps, overgrown yards, and broken cars. Letting go of what once was felt sad but also empowering.

Creating New Memories

Since that trip, I’ve decided to make new memories—with new people (or maybe on my own)—in new places. I’m only a five- or six-hour drive from the Washington coast, and I’ve fallen in love with its beaches and islands. Years ago, when I was seeing someone who lived near the Puget Sound, I discovered its quiet beauty. Next year, I want to explore that area more deeply.

Discovering a New Passion: Gardening

This summer also taught me something unexpected: I enjoy gardening—at least a little. I want to learn how to plant and nurture without killing the expensive plants I bring home. Someday soon, I’d love to build a greenhouse to grow herbs, vegetables, and strawberries.

I also traveled to Eastern Oregon to visit my lifelong friend Sheryl. That trip reminded me that life still holds beauty and friendship, even after profound loss.

Embracing Life with Purpose

I’ve reached a place where I no longer hate life or wish it would end. Instead, I want to embrace the time I’ve been given. I believe God still has a purpose for me, and my heart longs to fulfill it. When the day comes to greet the King, I want to arrive with gratitude, a head held high, and a heart full of new memories.

Reflection for You

As the seasons shift, we all find ourselves closing certain chapters and opening new ones.

  • What memories from this summer will you cherish as you move into the next season of your life?

  • What small steps could you take to create new memories that honor both your past and your future?

Take a moment to reflect, write, or even share your thoughts with someone you trust. Each reflection is a step toward embracing the life ahead.

The Journey Ahead

Life is a journey filled with ups and downs. Each experience shapes who we are. As we move forward, let’s remember to celebrate our victories, no matter how small.

Let’s also acknowledge the challenges. They teach us resilience. They remind us of our strength.

So, what’s next for you? Are you ready to step into a new adventure? Embrace the unknown with open arms. You never know what beautiful experiences await you.

In this journey of rebuilding, remember that you’re not alone. We’re all in this together, navigating the waves of life. Let’s support each other as we create new beginnings and redefine our identities.
